Chloride levels in Surface Water – Yahara Lakes

Select a Lake
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator reports the chloride levels (ppm) in surface water samples from lakes in the City of Madison.

Why is this important?

Similar to drinking water trends, chloride in surface waters have also reported increases. Although the average chloride levels in each of the sampled lakes (Lakes Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, Kegonsa, and Wingra) do not pose an immediate risk to human health these levels could impact the ecology of Dane County lakes.  This is especially true for Lake Wingra, which consistently displays higher levels of chloride than any other Yahara chain lake and continues to increase.
