Manganese Levels <50ppb in the Water Distribution System

This indicator represents the percentage of total samples that were less than the secondary drinking water guidance level of 50ppb.

Why is this important?

Manganese is a naturally occurring component of the deep-aquifer beneath Dane County. This metal can unevenly accumulate as sediment in water distribution pipes and fixtures; especially in large municipal systems.
 
The secondary guidance level (SDWR) of 50ppb has been established to protect against reduced aesthetic water quality (taste, odor, and/or color), discoloration of clothing, and impacts to household fixtures and appliances. An additional lifetime health advisory guideline of 300ppb has also been used to guide water quality efforts and protect against concern of potential neurological impacts from manganese exposure.
