Air Quality Index (% Moderate)

Measurement Period: 2020
This indicator shows the percentage of days recorded in the Air Quality Index (AQI) categorized as medium for Ozone and PM 2.5.

Why is this important?

Prolonged exposure to poor air quality has been associated with an increased risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases including asthma, heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. This indicator demonstrates the percentage of days recorded in each of the AQI categories over a 10-year timeframe (2011 – 2020) to evaluate trend data for air quality in Dane County. As shown in the current and accompanying figures, approximately 79.2% of the days were classified as “good” air quality over the past 10 years; the remaining measurements were classified as “moderate” (20.6%) or “unhealthy for sensitive groups” (0.2%). No measurements were classified as “very unhealthy” or “hazardous” in Dane County during this timeframe.
