Forward Exam Proficiency: Mathematics

Measurement Period: 2023-2024
The percentage of students scoring Proficient and Advanced in Mathematics on the Forward exams. 

Why is this important?

During the 2015-16 school year, Wisconsin rolled out a new assessment called the Wisconsin Forward Exam. The Exam is designed to gauge how well students are doing in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards.  These standards outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready. The Forward Exam is administered online in the spring of each school year at:

  • grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics,
  • grades 4 and 8 in Science and,
  • grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies.

Change in methodology for 2020-2021:
The Forward and DLM exam were not administered during the 2019-2020 school year due to COVID-19 pandemic-related school closures.
Change in methodology for 2023-2024:
The Spring 2024 administration of mathematics exam is the first administration with new performance standards (cut scores). Performance level cut score recommendations were provided by a committee of Wisconsin educators for mathematics. These cut score recommendations were approved by the Superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction for use in Wisconsin beginning with the 2023-24 administration of the Forward Exam.
